Proverbs 12:22

Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are His delight.

Do you ever watch a show or a movie and one character asks another character to tell them the truth? That character has two options: tell the truth, or lie. If they choose to lie, you often know it because of the inside knowledge you have. If they tell the truth, doesn’t it make you relieved? It does for me. Two shows that I really like are Pretty Little Liars and Jane the Virgin. I know that neither of those sound very godly, but they actually aren’t too terrible. As you can probably guess, there is a lot of lying on Pretty Little Liars. Multiple times each episode, at least one character has the opportunity to tell the truth. I just sit there thinking, ‘Please just tell the truth! It’s the right thing to do! If you don’t, then it’ll come back to bite you!’ However, as the title implies, they usually choose to lie. When they do, I’m very disappointed. On the other hand, there’s Jane the Virgin. Although there’s a lot of secrets and deceit and manipulation (what would a TV show be without those things?), there’s also a lot of honesty. A majority of the time when a character is pushed to tell the truth, they do. Even though it may hurt them at first, it usually works out for the best in the end. Now, when I watch the show, I can typically be prepared to be relieved and proud when the characters are honest with each other. Yes, Jane can lie and tell the two guys in her love triangle that she doesn’t know how she feels, but she chooses to admit that she loves both of them. It leads to some anamosity at first, but it ends up showing her who she should be with-even if that’s no one at the moment. It’s always best to tell the truth. Even if it doesn’t help at first, chances are it’ll make things better for you later on. Lies pile up and, eventually, you have to deal with all of them. That’s unnecessary baggage. Next time someone looks you in the eye and asks you to tell them the truth, do it. It may hurt, but not as much as a lie.
